Two businesses of identical size running the same platform can see email contribute 8% of revenue for one and 35% for the other.

That gap is almost never about which platform they chose.

This is worth saying before the comparison, because the amount of energy stores spend choosing an email platform is wildly disproportionate to how much the choice affects results. The platform sets a ceiling. What you actually send determines where you sit under it, and most stores sit nowhere near their ceiling on any platform.

With that framing, here is how the three actually differ.

What actually separates them

Not features. All three send emails, build segments, and run automated flows. The real differences are in three areas.

Depth of ecommerce data integration. How much Shopify data the platform holds, how usable it is for segmentation, and how granular the behavioural triggers get. This is where the biggest functional gap sits.

Sophistication ceiling. How complex a programme you can build before hitting limits — conditional splits inside flows, predictive data, custom properties, cross-channel orchestration.

Cost as you scale. All three price primarily on contact count, and the curves diverge sharply. A platform that looks reasonable at 5,000 contacts can be uncomfortable at 50,000.

Everything else — template editors, deliverability, basic automation — is close enough between them that it rarely decides anything.

Klaviyo

The ecommerce specialist, and the default for stores where email is a serious revenue channel.

Where it is strong. Klaviyo was built for ecommerce rather than adapted to it, and the depth shows in segmentation. You can build audiences on almost any combination of behaviour and order history: people who bought a specific product more than 60 days ago and have not opened an email since, people who browsed a collection three times without purchasing, people whose predicted next order date has passed. That granularity is the platform’s real advantage, because segmentation is what separates email programmes that work from ones that do not.

The Shopify integration is the deepest of the three. Product data, order history, browse behaviour, cart activity, and customer properties all flow in and become available for segmentation and dynamic content. Flow building supports conditional logic, multiple splits, and time-based branching without fighting the interface.

Predictive analytics — estimated customer lifetime value, predicted next order date, churn risk — are useful once you have enough data to make them meaningful, and they enable segments you cannot build any other way.

SMS runs on the same platform with shared profiles, which matters because managing email and SMS in separate tools with separate lists gets messy fast.

The reporting attributes revenue to flows and campaigns clearly, which sounds basic and is where several cheaper tools disappoint.

Where the friction is. Cost. Klaviyo is the most expensive of the three and the gap widens as your list grows. For a store with a large list and modest revenue, the bill can become hard to justify.

It is also more tool than many stores use. The capability that makes it powerful requires someone to wield it, and a store running four basic flows on Klaviyo is paying for a great deal of unused capability.

There is a learning curve. Not steep, but real.

Who it suits. Stores where email is or should be a major revenue channel, stores with enough product range or purchase frequency for segmentation to have something to work with, and anyone running both email and SMS. If you intend to invest in email and retention work properly, this is usually where that investment goes furthest.

Omnisend

The ecommerce-focused middle option, positioned between specialist depth and generalist simplicity.

Where it is strong. Omnisend is built for ecommerce too, and covers the common cases well at a lower price point. The Shopify integration is solid, the pre-built ecommerce flows are sensible out of the box, and the interface is more approachable than Klaviyo’s.

Email, SMS, and push sit in one place with shared automation, which is properly useful for smaller teams who want multi-channel without multi-tool complexity.

Pricing has typically been more forgiving as lists grow, and the free tier is workable for very small stores — which matters when you are starting out and the alternative is paying for capability you cannot yet use.

Setup is faster. For a store that wants the core flows running well this month rather than a sophisticated programme built over a quarter, that is a real advantage.

Where the friction is. The sophistication ceiling is lower. Segmentation is capable but less granular, flow logic is less flexible for complex conditional branching, and the advanced predictive features are thinner. Most stores never reach these limits — but stores with sophisticated ambitions eventually do, and migrating an established email programme is painful.

The ecosystem is smaller. Fewer third-party integrations, fewer agencies with deep experience, less community knowledge to draw on when you are stuck.

Who it suits. Small and mid-sized stores wanting solid ecommerce email without specialist cost, teams without a dedicated email person, and stores whose programme will be a handful of well-built flows plus regular campaigns rather than an elaborate segmentation machine. Also a sensible starting point when you are unsure how central email will become.

Mailchimp

The generalist, and the most widely known name of the three.

Where it is strong. Familiarity counts for something. Many people have used Mailchimp, the interface is polished, the template editor is pleasant, and the brand is trusted. It handles general email marketing competently and has broadened into a wider marketing suite.

For a business that is not primarily ecommerce — a service business, a content brand, a store where email is mostly announcements rather than revenue-driving automation — Mailchimp is entirely reasonable.

Where the friction is. It is not an ecommerce-first tool, and the Shopify relationship has a history worth knowing about: the official integration was removed years ago after a dispute over customer data, and connection has since depended on third-party or restored connectors. Verify the current state of the integration before committing, because this is exactly the kind of thing that changes.

More fundamentally, ecommerce segmentation and automation are weaker. The behavioural triggers and product-level data that make Klaviyo powerful are either absent or shallower, which limits the kind of programme you can build. For a store whose email revenue depends on abandoned-browse flows, post-purchase sequences keyed to specific products, and replenishment timing, that limitation is the whole ballgame.

Pricing is competitive at small scale and less so as lists grow, particularly given the narrower ecommerce feature set.

Who it suits. Stores where email is a minor channel, businesses with a significant non-ecommerce side, and teams already invested in Mailchimp for other reasons. It is rarely the right answer for a store trying to make email a major revenue driver.

Side by side

Klaviyo

Omnisend

Mailchimp

Built for ecommerce

Yes, natively

Yes

No, generalist

Shopify data depth

Deepest

Good

Shallower

Segmentation granularity

Highest

Capable

Basic

Flow logic flexibility

Most flexible

Moderate

Limited

SMS in same platform

Yes

Yes

Limited

Predictive data

Yes

Thinner

Minimal

Ease of setup

Moderate

Easiest of the three

Easy

Cost at scale

Highest

Moderate

Moderate

Agency/expertise availability

Widest

Narrower

Wide but general

Pricing figures are deliberately absent. All three price on contact count with tiers that change, and the vendors’ own pages are the only reliable source.

The questions that should decide it

What share of revenue do you want email to produce?

If the answer is 25% or more, you need real segmentation, and that points to a specialist tool. If email is one channel among several and you expect 8–12%, a simpler platform will not hold you back.

How much product range and purchase frequency do you have?

Segmentation needs something to segment on. A store with 400 SKUs and customers who reorder every six weeks has enormous scope for behavioural targeting. A store with eight products bought once has far less, and pays for sophistication it cannot use.

Who will actually run this?

A capable platform operated by nobody produces worse results than a simple platform operated well. Match the tool to the person.

Will you run SMS?

If yes, strongly prefer a platform that handles both, because running them separately creates consent-management and frequency problems that are tedious to fix later.

What is your list size trajectory?

Model the cost at 3x your current list, not today’s. Stores get surprised by this routinely.

What else needs to connect?

Your helpdesk, loyalty programme, reviews platform, and subscription app may all need to exchange data with your email platform. Check each specifically — and where a connector does not exist, building the integration is a real cost to plan for rather than discover.

A worked example: the platform was never the problem

A homeware brand came to us convinced they needed to move from Omnisend to Klaviyo. Email was producing about 9% of revenue, they had read that good stores see 25–30%, and the conclusion they had drawn was that their platform was limiting them.

We looked at what they were actually sending before discussing migration.

They had three flows: a welcome email, an abandoned cart, and an order confirmation. The welcome was a single email with a discount code. The abandoned cart was one message sent four hours later. They sent a campaign roughly every three weeks, to their entire list, with no segmentation whatsoever.

Nothing about that is a platform limitation. Every one of those gaps could be closed on the tool they already had.

So we did. The welcome became a four-email sequence introducing the brand’s materials and process before asking for anything. Abandoned cart became three messages with different angles rather than three reminders. We added a browse-abandonment flow, a post-purchase sequence keyed to product category, and a replenishment flow for their candle range. Campaigns moved to weekly and got split into three basic segments by engagement.

Email went from 9% to 24% of revenue over four months, on Omnisend.

They did eventually move to Klaviyo, about a year later, when their segmentation ambitions outgrew the tool. But by then they knew exactly what they wanted it for, and the migration improved a programme that was already working rather than being a substitute for building one.

That sequence — build the programme, then upgrade the tool when you hit its limits — is the right order, and almost nobody follows it.

What actually drives email revenue

Since the platform is not the lever, here is what is, roughly in order.

Flows, not campaigns. Automated sequences triggered by behaviour do most of the work. Welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment, win-back. A store with six well-built flows and occasional campaigns will outperform one with weekly campaigns and two flows.

Sequences, not single emails. One abandoned cart email leaves most of the recovery on the table. Three, with different angles rather than escalating nags, recovers considerably more.

Segmentation by engagement, at minimum. Sending everything to everyone depresses deliverability and annoys people. Even a crude split between engaged and dormant helps.

List growth quality over quantity. A popup offering a discount to anyone collects discount hunters. Slightly better targeting produces a smaller list that performs better per contact — which also costs less, since you are paying per contact.

Actual content worth opening. The unglamorous truth. Emails that say something — about materials, process, use, people — build the relationship that makes the promotional emails work. Stores that only ever send offers train their list to wait for offers.

Deliverability hygiene. Sunsetting unengaged contacts, authenticating your domain, and keeping complaint rates low. Ignored until it breaks, at which point nothing else works.

None of that is platform-specific. All of it matters more than which of the three you pick.

The flows that matter, and what most stores get wrong about them

Since flows do most of the work regardless of platform, it is worth being specific about which ones and how they usually fail.

Welcome sequence. The most valuable real estate you have, because people are more engaged in the first week after subscribing than they will ever be again. Most stores waste it on a single email containing a discount code, which trains the relationship to be transactional from the first contact. A four or five email sequence that introduces what you make, why, and how to choose between options — with the offer somewhere in the middle rather than leading — consistently outperforms the single-discount version, both immediately and in the lifetime value of those subscribers.

Abandoned cart. Nearly every store has one and most have only one email. The recovery curve keeps producing across three messages, and the reason is that the three should do different jobs rather than repeat the same reminder louder. The first can be a simple practical nudge. The second can address the likely hesitation — sizing, shipping, returns, whether it suits their situation. The third can introduce social proof or a light time pressure. Three reminders annoy people. Three different angles convert them.

Browse abandonment. Triggered when someone views a product repeatedly without adding to cart. Far less commonly implemented than abandoned cart and often nearly as productive, because repeated viewing is a strong interest signal and the hesitation is usually addressable with information rather than discount. This one requires the platform to be receiving browse data, which is a real point of difference between tools.

Post-purchase. Usually treated as a shipping notification and nothing more. It should set expectations, help the customer get the most from what they bought, and — timed correctly for the product — introduce the natural next purchase. For considered products, a sequence that helps someone use the thing well produces both fewer returns and more repeat orders.

Replenishment. For consumables, the single highest-return flow available, and the one most often missing. Estimate the consumption cycle for each product and reach out shortly before someone runs out. Getting the timing right matters more than the copy; too early reads as pushy, too late and they have already bought elsewhere.

Win-back. For customers past their expected reorder window. Modest returns compared with the others, but cheap to build and it works on an audience you have already paid to acquire.

Build those six properly and you have the majority of achievable email revenue, on any of the three platforms discussed here.

What to check before you commit

A short due-diligence list, because these are the things stores wish they had verified.

Model the cost at three times your current list size. Contact-based pricing scales in ways that surprise people, and switching later is expensive in effort. Know what the bill looks like when the plan works.

Confirm every integration you depend on. Write down your helpdesk, reviews app, loyalty programme, subscription platform, and analytics, then check each one individually. Assume nothing from a logo on a partners page — look for the actual connector and what data it passes.

Check what happens to unengaged contacts. Some platforms charge for contacts you have stopped emailing, which quietly inflates the bill. Understand whether you can archive or suppress without paying.

Ask how revenue attribution works. You need to know which flows and campaigns produce money, and the attribution windows and methods differ between tools. A platform that reports vaguely here makes it impossible to improve.

Verify data export. Can you get your contacts, their properties, and their engagement history out in a usable form? This determines how trapped you are, and it is worth knowing before rather than after.

Test the editor with your own brand. Spend an hour building one real email in each candidate. Template editors that look fine in a demo can be frustrating with your actual fonts, layout, and product imagery, and you will be living in that editor weekly.

The bottom line

Klaviyo if email is or will be a major revenue channel and you have the range, frequency, and person to use its depth. Omnisend if you want solid ecommerce email at a friendlier price with a lower learning curve, which covers a great many stores honestly. Mailchimp if email is a minor channel or your business is not primarily ecommerce.

But hold the comparison loosely. If your current programme is three basic flows and unsegmented monthly campaigns, you have far more available to you on whatever platform you already have than you would gain by switching. Build the programme first. Upgrade when you hit a real limit, and you will know exactly what you are upgrading for.

Frequently asked questions

Is Klaviyo worth the extra cost over Omnisend?

It depends entirely on whether you will use the difference. Klaviyo’s advantage is segmentation granularity and flow logic flexibility — the ability to target people on precise combinations of behaviour and order history, and to build flows with complex conditional branching. If you have the product range, purchase frequency, and someone to build those segments, that capability produces real incremental revenue and justifies the cost. If your programme is six standard flows and campaigns split by engagement, Omnisend does that competently for less. The honest test: list the three segments you cannot build today that you believe would make money. If you cannot name them, you are not ready to pay for Klaviyo.

Can I still use Mailchimp with Shopify?

Connection has been possible through third-party and restored connectors since the official integration was removed following a dispute over customer data, but verify the current state directly before committing, since this area has changed more than once. The deeper question is whether you should. Mailchimp is a capable general email tool and a weaker ecommerce one — the product-level behavioural data and granular segmentation that drive ecommerce email revenue are thinner than in the specialist platforms. If email is a minor announcements channel, it is fine. If you want email producing a quarter of your revenue, you will hit its limits.

How much of my revenue should email produce?

For a Shopify store with email properly built out, 20–30% is a reasonable target, with the bulk of that coming from automated flows rather than campaigns. If you are in single digits, the cause is almost always programme design rather than platform: too few flows, single emails where sequences belong, no segmentation, and campaigns sent to everyone. Those are all fixable on whatever tool you already use. Treat a low figure as a brief rather than a reason to migrate — migrating rarely fixes it, and you carry the same habits to the new platform.

Should I run SMS on the same platform as email?

Almost always yes. Running them separately means two lists, two consent records, two sets of reporting, and no shared view of how often you are contacting someone across channels — which leads directly to over-messaging your best customers. A single platform with shared profiles lets you sequence across channels, suppress SMS for people who just received an email, and see total contact frequency per person. Both Klaviyo and Omnisend handle this. If you are choosing a platform and SMS is anywhere in your plans, weight this heavily, because separating them later is tedious to unpick.

How hard is it to migrate email platforms?

The list itself moves easily. The work is everything around it: rebuilding every flow in the new tool, recreating segments, rebuilding templates, reconnecting integrations, re-authenticating your sending domain, and warming up sending reputation on new infrastructure. Expect flows to need rebuilding rather than importing, and expect a temporary dip in deliverability while the new platform establishes its reputation for your domain. Plan for several weeks with both running in parallel, migrate flows one at a time rather than all at once, and never migrate in your peak trading season.

Email is the highest-return channel most Shopify stores have, and it is also the channel where the gap between stores is widest.
